gethsemane || art print
Many years ago, I lived on the island of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean. Due to the close proximity,I had the opportunity to take a day trip to Israel. We were picked up at the airport in Tel Aviv and whisked from site to site on a blur of a day.
I honestly don't remember a great deal, but one stop sticks out to me.
The garden of Gethsemane.
Do I remember much about the trees? No. The little chapel? Not really. What I remember are the tears that streamed down my face. Our tour guide saw me and asked what moved me so, as most people usually cry in proximity to the supposed location of the cross.
I tried to explain to this man. what Gethsemane meant to me. That it was here the Savior felt every sin, every pain, every sorrow so that we would one, never feel alone. But secondly, and most importantly, through Christ's suffering in Gethsemane the price of justice was met, making mercy possible.
I told him how my heart aches pondering how much pain Christ must have already been in before He was even put on the cross because of the suffering He experienced in an olive grove.
To me, Gethsemane was and is personal. And I'll never cease being grateful for what happened there.
