I am the Light of the world || art print
In the scriptures we are often taught that Christ is the light of the world, but it hit me differently during a particularly hard and heavy week.
Weighed down by emotional burdens, physical ailments, and a multitude of stresses I turned to my two favorite sources for relief. The studio and the scriptures. I found myself reading in 3 Nephi where the righteous are experiencing the cataclysmic destruction of the world they knew following the death of the Savior on the other side of the world. As entire cities were engulfed by sea and earth, the people found themselves wrapped in darkness. The darkness was such that stars did not shine nor could they even light a fire. For three days a darkness which the scriptures describe as a physical mist consumed all.
Then came a voice proclaiming, "Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world. And behold, I am the light and the life of the world." In the chapters of scripture following this declaration, we learn of how the resurrected Christ visited these people. He ministered to them, taught them, established His church among them. Through His resurrection, He restored light to the earth and these people.
As I was reading through these scriptures, my burdened mind so clearly saw an image of the Savior breaking through the physical mist of darkness to bring light back, and this painting is the result. Jesus Christ is the hope and the light all of us can rely on when the world goes dark. He will break through the mist to reach us if we just reach out our hands to Him.
After I painted this piece, I was still beset with worries, but the fog had lifted a bit. I wept and realized I wasn't alone and that the Savior was walking beside me through these trials as He does for all of us.
