seeking answers || art print

In the small town of Palmyra in upstate New York, there is a very unassuming grove of trees.  I've walked through these trees on summer days and marveled at the stillness and light dancing through the leaves.

It is a humble grove of trees.  But it is also where a humble prayer was answered.  In the spring of 1820, a young Joseph Smith took himself to the woods to ask his Father for guidance after reading the counsel of James 1:5, that if any of ye lack wisdom let him ask of God.

So, Joseph asked.  He prayed for answers and guidance.  What followed was what is now called The First Vision, where God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ visited the teenage Joseph in this unassuming grove.  They taught him and prepared him for ushering in the restoration of Christ's church on the earth.

I have always loved trees and I think this piece of history might be part of the reason.  To find solitude, answers, and eternal truths in the sheltering protection of limbs just leafing out for the season.  Such a miraculous gift for all of humanity in the most ordinary of places.

This painting is based on a photo a friend of mine took inside the Sacred Grove. I love to  imagine the stories these trees tell each other of when they saw the Savior and the Father and welcomed Them Both.
