lemon study || botanical art print
Do you know why I love painting lemons?
Early in my married life I lived on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. I knew nothing about the country before landing there but it quickly wrapped it’s way around my heart.
The streets were lined with citrus trees. Oranges, lemons, tangerines, you name it, it grew. I would walk past trees bursting with fruit and smile at the abundance.
At that time, I was reconnecting with paints. If I could go back, I’d paint every doorframe and rambling mountain village I could. But back then, I wasn’t ready. What I was ready for was lemons. And I painted them with wild abandon.
This is why a lemon or two will always be in the shop. It reminds me of new beginnings, a country I long for daily, friends who helped shape me, and above all, they remind me to smile.
